Revathi, a classical dancer having performed in India and abroad, along with her husband Yogesh who has worked with IHCL ( The Taj Hotels) in Delhi for 22 years says….
“We love nature and thus left Delhi and settled in Coorg built our home with the idea of running it as a homestay. Hospitality is in our blood and aesthetics in our soul.”
YC - As a founder how typically you spend your day in the office?
Revathi - Running any establishment is a time-consuming effort. Right from early morning coffee, we are at the service of the guests. But the biggest advantage is the fact that we LOVE what we are doing and it’s the passion that drives us. We are our own boss and can afford to take a break whenever we feel the need.
YC - Do you use social media platforms to promote your homestay?
Revathi - Yes, we have used social media. I regularly post on FB or Instagram. But more than any social media, it is word of mouth that gets us business. We have not ventured too much into marketing since it is just a small homestay.
YC - Can you elaborate on the challenges you faced in promoting your business?
Revathi - Initially when we started 14 years ago, there were very few homestays or resorts in Coorg. It was easy to establish ourselves. Over the years, there has been an influx of legal/illegal entities which have cropped up… many spoil the name and concept of homestays with terrible facilities. This is detrimental to business. But luckily for us, we have a name and regular clientele. Those who value service, come to us blindly.
YC - Can you share some numbers on your homestay occupancy?
Revathi - Post lockdown we are running at 80% occupancy.
YC - What according to you is the USP of your homestay, for which your customers come back to you?
Revathi -The main USP is the maintenance and upkeep of the facilities and the personal attention to details in running the place. We are very much here and ensure safety norms are followed and the guests get what they want. Personalized food requirements and choices make a huge difference. Home-cooked food is also a big USP. Being in our coffee estate with a brook flowing within, there is enough space for people to move around.
YC - Could you please share with our readers about your core team and their roles :
What is the current Team Size - We have 5 employees
Team Roles - Each staff is an expert in all aspects of hospitality be it cooking, housekeeping or maintenance.
YC - Based on your experience so far would you have any advice for new Entrepreneurs.
“Go with your heart. Understand your passion and then let that take you ahead. Hard work is mandatory in any field...becomes easier if you are happy doing what you love. Be sincere, be truthful and be honest in your venture. No one can then pull you down. Be kind to people and appreciate the differences….no venture can succeed without support. Don't think of monetary gain first….make the venture a successful one. The money will follow.”
